The sport of futsal is growing at a rapid pace around the world, including the Americas. Evidence of this took place last week in the first-ever CONCACAF Futsal Club Championship hosted in Guatemala City. Six clubs from Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico competed over five days to crown a champion.
The six teams were place in two groups of three with pool play deciding seeding for the semifinals.
Semifinal losers Sidekicks of Mexico and Habana faced off in the Third Place Match, playing to a 1-1 draw. After no goals scored in extra time the match was decided by PK’s. Both clubs converted in the first round before Sidekicks keeper Jose Saavedra made two saves to seal the victory.
The final featured the host club Glucosoral facing Costa Rican-side Borussia. Approximately 4,000 Guatemalan fans packed the Domo Polideportivo in support of their club.
Glucosoral opened scoring in the 11′ and quickly added a second for a 2-0 lead. Borussia scored their first to cut the lead to 2-1 before the clubs exchanged goals to make it 3-2. Edgar Santizo struck a rocket just before halftime to earn Glucosoral a 4-2 halftime lead.
The teams went back-and-forth with no scoring until Alonso Cordero scored his first of two with approximately 9 minutes remaining to make the score 4-3. Cordero stunned the home crowd with the equalizer with just :19 left to send the match into extra time.
No goals were found in the overtime and PK’s would decide a winner. Both clubs were stopped in the opening round before four consecutive goals by each team. In the sixth round Marvin Sandoval Pravo converted his PK to give Glucosoral a 5-4 lead. Keeper Miguel Santizo then made the save on Diego Zuñiga to clinch the trophy!
