Ron Newman Cup Preview: Mustangs Clash With La Fiera

Two trophies will be awarded sometime this evening at Sears
Centre Arena in a winner-takes-all matchup between the top two PASL teams: Chicago Mustangs and Hidalgo La Fiera. Chicago advanced to this spot by defeating Eastern Division opponent Cleveland Freeze 10-3 in their Ron Newman Cup semifinal. Hidalgo fought for a hard-earned 5-4 victory against Las Vegas Legends. The La Fiera win also served as a U.S. Open semifinal and set up the double final this afternoon.

Chicago will be looking to complete the PASL Triple Crown, winning the regular season title, Ron Newman Cup and U.S. Open trophy all in the same season. San Diego Sockers were the last to accomplish the feat after a perfect 16-0 record in 2011-12. The Sockers also were Triple Crown winners in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

The Mustangs rolled through the season, going 16-0 in league play and scoring a league-high 202 goals. Three games in the U.S. Open provided additional challenges to their perfect season, but Chicago advanced with little difficulty.

Hidalgo had a slightly more difficult path to the finals, finishing with a 14-2 regular season record in the tough Central Division. Dropping their opening game of the season against arch-rival Monterrey Flash, La Fiera would win nine in-a-row before stumbling again in Monterrey. Revenge would be sweet for the border-club, who defeated the Flash in mid-January 7-1 and ending their season in the division playoff final on March 1.

U.S. Open victories over Dallas Sidekicks, Austin FC and Las Vegas have Hidalgo La Fiera in position to make their claim to the two trophies. It will all be decided tonight. Two teams. Two trophies. One game.

Fans can purchase tickets online or at the Sears Centre Arena box office. The game will stream live online via America ONE Sports (English) or the Chicago Mustangs YouTube channel (Spanish).
