Two division champions will clash this weekend at the Sears Centre in Chicago, as the Central Division Champion Hidalgo La Fiera FC (14-2) will go up against the Pacific Division Champion Las Vegas Legends (13-3) in the first semifinal of the Ron Newman Cup, which will take place on March 15th.
Hidalgo La Fiera boasts an offense that led the PASL in goal differential (+120) and was second in the league in goals scored. Coach Bollella kept last year’s team intact and brought in Farias Ughy to complete a roster that is battle tested and ready to take their place as the team to challenge for this year’s Ron Newman Cup title.
The Las Vegas Legends fell in last year’s semifinals and decided to retool the team during the offseason. Coach Cohen added players to the team that would compliment Vegas superstar Enrique Tovar, who had a league record 40 assists, and provide enough scoring power to reach the next level. Las Vegas proved this year that the new formula works by defeating league power, San Diego Flash, twice in a row to reach this year’s semifinal.
Hidalgo and Las Vegas are two teams with the same goal in mind: reach the finals and hoist the Ron Newman Cup. Both La Fiera and the Legends had a tough road leading up to this moment. Hidalgo defeated rival Monterrey Flash by the score of 9-8 and the Legends defeated the Sockers 11-7. These were two incredibly tough games that took a lot out of these two teams, but, with the cup in sight, these teams will have to dig deep and survive two more games in order to be crowned champions.
