PASL Perfect

The Chicago Mustangs completed their first mission for this PASL season tonight, defeating the Cincinnati Saints 23-6. The victory ended a perfect 16-0 regular season for Chicago, who scored a league-high 202 goals. That goal total was 22 more goals than the next highest team total (Las Vegas Legends).

The season is far from complete for the second-year club, with two more trophies to in their sights. As the top team in the regular season, Chicago will host the Ron Newman Cup finals on March 15-16. Receiving a bye to the semifinals, the Mustangs will face winners of the three upcoming division playoffs.

Before the playoffs come to Chicago next month the Mustangs will look to earn their spot in another final; the U.S. Open tournament. Next Saturday the Mustangs welcome division-rival Cleveland Freeze (10-6) to Grand Sports Arena in a semifinal match. The winner earns a berth to the final of the 40-team knockout tournament.

Wilo Martinez (5 goals, 4 assists) led the Mustangs attack in the huge victory over Cincinnati. With the nine-point effort in the final regular season game, Martinez finished with 63 points and top scorer in PASL. His 40 goals was also a league-high, tied with teammate Bryan Moya (40 goals, 15 assists).

A team effort 23-goal game, Miguel Vaca hit the back of the net five times, Moya scored four and Adrian Ortiz added three goals. Veteran goalie Jesus Flores, who played every minute of all 16 games this season, made seven saves and added an assist.

With much yet to accomplish, tonight the Mustangs celebrate. Chicago and it’s fans know an undefeated season is a great accomplishment in any league of any level.
