Milwaukee Wave Make Statement, Shutout Defending Champs

The MISL soccer season is just two weeks old, but the Milwaukee Wave have made their intentions known: a 7th MISL championship is the target. Yet to play a home match, Milwaukee have looked very impressive in their opening matches, winning all three.

The Wave started the season by winning on the road with a thrilling 23-21 overtime classic against Missouri Comets. Veteran forward Ian Bennett scored five times (including the OT game-winner) for the Wave and was honored as MISL Player of the Week.

An east coast trip starting with the defending MISL champion Baltimore Blast was played on November 23. Both clubs were 21-5 in the regular season last year, but Milwaukee was knocked out of the playoffs by Missouri in the semifinal series. Baltimore went on to defeat Missouri in the final.

It took over nine minutes for a goal, scored by J.C, Banks, but Milwaukee (3-0) had all they needed as they completely shut down the Blast (1-1) winning 8-0.

The 24-year old Banks, who played his college soccer for UW-Green Bay and summers with the Madison 56ers SC (National Premier Soccer League), scored again at 8:49 of the second quarter with an unassisted 3-point shot to give Milwaukee a 5-0 lead. Just over a minute later another 3-pointer by veteran Brazilian Hewerton finished off the scoring as both teams failed to score in the second half.

Banks currently plays his outdoor game with the Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO). In 2011 Banks was named Rhinos Rookie of the Year after scoring 2 goals and 4 assists. He followed that effort with a 2012 season (5 goals, 8 assists) when he was team MVP. The 2013 season was limited for Banks as he recovered from ACL knee surgery.

Milwaukee closed the weekend on Sunday afternoon with another dominating performance against the Pennsylvania Roar, winning 21-4. The expansion Roar tied the match at 4-4 midway into the second quarter on a goal from Chris Williams and Pennsylvania seemed to be in the match. That was all the Wave would allow on the night as they scored 17 unanswered points, led by a Nicholas Perera hat trick. Marcelo Fontana and Ian Bennett each scored a pair of goals while Marcio Leite, Tenzin Rampa and 2012-13 MISL Rookie of the Year Luan Oliveira scored one goal apiece.

The Wave will have their home opener on December 7 when they rematch the Baltimore Blast. The next game for Pennsylvania is scheduled for December 1 as they host the Syracuse Silver Knights. Tune into YouTube all season long as each MISL match will stream live and free of charge!
