+MISL Soccer 2013-14 PREVIEW – from http://misl.uslsoccer.com/home/769506.html

Coach: Josh Rife
2012-13 Record: 10-16
Playoffs: DNQ

The Lowdown: The +Rochester Lancers were arguably the most exciting team to watch in the MISL last season, with the scoring duo of Doug Miller and Mauricio Salles finishing 1-2 in at the top of the individual points totals. The side’s struggles at the other end of the field, however, ended its playoff hopes. New coach Josh Rife will try to bring some of the Milwaukee Wave’s defensive discipline to the Lancers, and return them to the playoffs.

Key Losses: Defender Evan McNeley brought solid play and some impressive scoring punch after being acquired mid-season from the Milwaukee Wave, while Rey Martinez was effective creating chances that led to 12 assists a season ago. Both their production, and that of third-leading scorer Jeremy Ortiz, will need to be replaced.

Key Returnees: Miller and Salles’ goals will of course be essential, but the Lancers will also look for increases in production from All-Rookie team members Pedrinho and Stephen Basso. Goalkeepers Gavin McInerney and Patrick Hannigan will hope for more protection from their defensive unit after both recorded points-against averages of more than 13 last season.

Key Additions: Forward Andrew Hoxie returns to the Lancers after spending last season with Wichita, and the Lancers will hope he can replicate his 45-point performance two seasons ago. Edgar Bartolomeu also brings experience, having won a pair of MISL Championships with Philadelphia, and the Lancers will also hope the players moving up from their reserve side, such as George Morningstar, can make a positive impact in their rookie seasons.

Outlook: The addition of Rife behind the bench ought to be a positive one, with the Lancers certainly capable of better than the 6.9 goals-against average they posted a season ago. If Rife can get the defense organized, the Lancers will be a good bet to remain entertaining, but also be a playoff contender.
